Exploring Geneva-on-the-Lake, Ohio

Since I began writing this blog (last year, AHEM) the world has changed significantly! It’s like we are living on a different planet! Masks are now mandatory, hugs and handshakes are out, crowded bars are a thing of the past. One thing that hasn’t changed, how AWESOME, Ohio is! We did a lot of exploring of our very own state last Summer, and it was the perfect reminder all that Ohio has to offer. It’s not necessary to hop a flight to have the perfect weekend getaway, because I’ve found it right here in Ohio! Geneva-on-the-Lake, land of the wine slushies, gorgeous sunsets and Lake Erie Monster Bar Crawl. Who knew?

We headed North for a weekend of Jersey Shore meets Cape Cod and it could not have been more FUN! Zach had visited Geneva-on-the-Lake before, so he was aware of all it’s hidden treasures, I on the other hand was completely clueless what lay in store for us!

The Lodge is the PERFECT place to call home for family, couples, anyone looking for an easy, convenient and wonderful place to stay right on stunning Lake Erie.

The Three Gentlemen Campers

In the early 1900s, three rather distinguished gentlemen embarked on a series of annual treks into the wilds and wilderness of America’s North Coast. According to onlookers, it was a rare sight, indeed, as servants scurried about laying campfires and pitching tents so that John D. Rockefeller, Harvey Firestone and Henry Ford could get down to the business of camping, fishing, and just having fun in, of all places, Geneva-on the-Lake, Ohio.

There is no question that these three gentlemen possessed great vision and great wealth. They could easily have chosen a more exotic, more exclusive locale for their outings. So, perhaps, it was their uncanny genius for taking advantage of a good thing when they saw it that brought them back, again and again. And, perhaps that’s also why Geneva-on-the-Lake, Ohio’s First Summer Resort, continues to thrive, filling up each year with vacationers who, too, know a good deal when they see it.

The Lodge at Geneva-on-the-Lake boasts breathtaking views with its location on the southern shore of Lake Erie, near Geneva State Park in the heart of Ohio Wine Country.

What began as the Buckeye State’s first summer resort town is now a four-season star among vacation destinations. Geneva-on-the-Lake is set in Northeast Ohio’s most attractive countryside. Starting its second decade of creating inspiring Ohio vacations for guests, The Lodge at Geneva-on-the-Lake is a natural for romantic escapes, family fun, meetings, lakefront weddings, celebrations and much more.
Whether you enjoy skiing the lakefront trail, savoring the flavors of wine country or exploring Geneva State Park – The Lodge at Geneva serves signature experiences all year long.
I’m outdoorsy in, I like to enjoy a beer outside by a lake.

There are SO MANY Ohio Wineries to enjoy in the area. Amanda, from Girl About Columbus wrote an awesome blog that details a wondrous girls trip to Ohio Wine Country! Did you even know Ohio had a Wine Country!? Now you do!

I cannot wait to come back with a group of girlfriends to lush out on Ohio Wines for a weekend!

This was the BEST evening! Talk about taking a load off, decompressing and relaxing! We ordered drinks (wine slushie for her, Budweiser for him), apps, listened to the band play oldies, as we took in the most exquisite sunset over Lake Erie. We walked into the park with our drinks (awesome open container laws) and took some photos like true young kids in love, watching the antique Ferris wheel twirl, Neil Young’s “Heart of Gold” swirled around us as twilight fell.

It was magical.

Lake Erie Monster Pub Crawl

Geneva-on-the-Lake’s Lake Erie Monster Crawl is in full swing through Labor Day Weekend! Visit all the establishments listed Geneva-on-the-Lake “Crawl Card”  and make sure you get their stamp!  FREE shirt to anyone completing the crawl, and a purchase is required at each location but does not have to be alcohol.

Getting Around Geneva

The great thing about staying at the Lodge is they offer free bikes for you to use. All you have to do is ask the front desk and they will hook you up with a bike to get you to and from town! Geneva is maybe a total of 2 miles long, so biking is a great option. There are sidewalks almost the entire way from the Lodge to the center of town, so you can easily avoid traffic. It’s also a great way to see the cute cape cod-ish houses that line the main strip. The lighthouse one is my favorite!

Pro Tip: The sidewalks get a little crowded as you get close to the center of town, hit the Old Firehouse Winery first and park your bikes at their bike racks to the left. You’re basically at the beginning of all the fun town happenings, so walking is a much easier way to navigate the crowded sidewalks. Then you can stop and grab your bikes on the way out of town.

My second favorite way to get around Geneva was Sunset Taxi. They will pick you up anywhere and take you to your next destination on their bumping golf cart limo. This was fun after some drinking and you don’t feel like biking anymore, it’s also cheap! Our driver knew what was going on in town and had some great tips about what spots to hit first on our Lake Erie Monster crawl.
